It is very difficult to determine, where to start or where to go, once you have decided to repair your credit history. One thing before you start is that you must realize that the damage has been done and now is the time to repair it. Also you must realize that you can fix your history.

Some simple yet effective ways to repair your history are as follows:

o Always know and remember that you can dispute any of the items on your report. You can contact the credit agency, which in turn should contact your creditor for clarification. If your creditor is not able to provide proof for their claims within 30 days to the credit bureau, then the credit agency has to remove those items from your faulty credit report. This is one tip which most often turns in your favor.

o You can also contact your creditor directly to discuss the outstanding balance and more payment options which are feasible for both you and the creditor. Sometimes it is better to be honest and candid about your financial woes.

o When you are trying to improve your FICA rating, always make sure that you pay all your creditors on time.

o If the idea of contacting the creditor does not appeal to you much and you are looking for a quick fix, then you can take professional help from one of the repair companies.

o Just make sure that you are thorough with your research before signing any agreements with them. The Credit Repair Organization Act of 1997, clearly states that the credit repair company is not supposed to take any money from you until they have rendered you the services which were agreed upon by you and the company. Collect all the documents related to payments and contract terms before paying them. Also take a written estimation from the company for the time frame for the reconstruction process.

o Also be aware that no credit repair tip or company can miraculously clean the blemishes from your report. However, following these simple tips or taking professional help, might make you a more desirable candidate for a mortgage loan or insurance.

9 Credit Repair Tips to Higher Credit Scores

Article by Larry Taylor

Repairing your credit the right way can be a gateway to better loans and more accomplishments. Many people feel the negativity that poor credit encompasses when they are turned down for loans and rentals. You can work on repairing your credit successfully by yourself one step at a time. Research is your friend in determining the right approach to repair your credit. The 9 tips below are there to help you make the right decisions and aid you in credit repair.

1. An important tip to consider when working to repair your credit is that you may need to consider having someone co-sign a lease or loan with you. This is important to know because your credit may be poor enough as to where you cannot attain any form of credit on your own and may need to start considering who to ask.

2. Learn how to recognize credit repair scams out there. These scams will cost you up-front and in the long run as the criminal activity that is committed falls back onto you. At the same time, you still have debts to repay, which could increase in the process of learning you have been scammed and doing something about it.

3. Do not make the mistake of trying to hide from your creditor if you are running behind on payments. The last thing you or the company wants is for your account to be sold to a collection agency. The company that you owe the debt to will only receive a tiny fraction of what is owed to them so they are usually motivated to work with you. If you are having trouble paying your bill, call and try to get an alternate arrangement set up.

4. If you want to improve your credit score, you can try requesting a higher credit limit. If you have a higher credit limit but avoid charging more to your cards than you usually would, your debt to available credit ratio will be decreased. However, don’t request this for too many creditors at once, as it may appear that you’re grasping for new credit.

5. If you are trying to repair your credit on your own, and you have written to all three credit bureaus to have wrong or negative items removed from your report without it being successful, just keep trying! While you may not get immediate results, your credit will get better if you persevere to get the results you want.

6. A must have skill for any person learning to repair their credit, is to pay more than the minimum balance. Not only does this improve your credit image and save you in finance charges, but it is a discipline that will carry over into other areas of your finances, such as unnecessary spending and a greater ability to budget. Paying more than the minimum is a valued and valuable discipline, we can all benefit from having.

7. Don’t be tempted to include a statement defending negative reports on your credit. While it can be hard to just let the negative reports go, the statement will not be considered when lenders look at your credit history. If anything, it will just hurt you, as it will draw attention to the negative event.

8. Don’t fall for credit repair scams making claims like “Credit problems? No problem!” or “Completely legal new credit identity, call now!” Legitimate companies do not make claims like this, these scams will take your money and not help your credit score. Instead, research how to help your credit yourself and save a lot of money.

9. Make sure you read over the report your credit card company sends you every month. Check every charge on there to make sure you aren’t being charged for something that you didn’t purchase. Also, look to make sure they haven’t accidentally applied any late fees if you haven’t been late.

As the beginning of this article stated, poor credit gets you nowhere in our modern society, where self worth is based on your credit rating. Don’t get turned down by everyone just because your credit score doesn’t match you. Work with companies to repair your credit the legal and proper way. Apply the tips above for success in your endeavor for credit repair.

Credit Repair Professional Tips

Pay Your Bills on Time

Credit repair means timely payments. Does this go without saying? If you want to repair your credit and improve your credit scores you cannot afford new late payments on your credit report. New late payments will have a major impact on your scores, as much as 100 points. The initial impact of a late payment will fade over time, so get those late payments behind you forever.

Open New Accounts

If you don’t have any open and active accounts on your credit report you cannot expect your credit repair effort to succeed. Credit scores are based on two broad categories of data, the good and the bad. Removing the bad stuff will get you halfway to your goal, but in the world of credit halfway doesn’t count for much. You need to build the good as well. It’s time to open new accounts, and credit cards are the perfect credit repair tool.

Try Secured Credit Cards

If you are trying to build new credit but can’t get approved for a credit card, try a secured card. It’s easy! Secured credit cards require a small saving account which will usually secure the entire credit line on your new card. Most secure cards require a minimum deposit of two to three hundred dollars. Don’t be embarrassed by the small amount, these little cards carry big credit repair power.

Manage Your Revolving Balances

The key to optimizing your credit scores with credit cards – aside from making your payments on time – is prudent balance management. The lower the better, but there are specific targets you should know. The current credit scoring model in use by lenders recognizes 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 percent usage. 20 and 40 are good, 60 is neutral, while 80 and 100 percent usage will reduce your scores, and if you want credit repair success, don’t even think of going over the limit.

Credit Repair and Authorized User Cards

Authorized user accounts have been the subject of much debate. Some credit repair companies, operating in a gray area of the law, have sold authorized card status for years to people who wanted a quick credit score boost. On July 31, 2008 Fair Isaac announced a software fix which blocks the benefit of these brokered accounts while leaving intact the benefit of legitimate spouse and family member cards. So if you have a relative with awesome credit that wants to help your credit repair project, have them add you as an authorized user and watch your score pop.

Credit Repair and Your Student Loans

If you have student loan problems you should pick up the phone right now (really, right now) and explore the many options that are available to get you back on track. Student loans are unique amongst all forms of debt; they have no statute of limitation for collection. The longer you ignore them the worse it gets. As tough as it sounds, there are many great resolutions available. The Student Loan Ombudsman Office has been set up to help you understand your rights. Call them at (877) 557-2575.

Clean Up Your Reports

Don’t believe everything you read, especially if it is on your credit report. Credit reports are typically loaded with errors, many of which can devastate your credit scores. Order all three of your reports, one from each bureau and plan to spend an hour proof reading each one. Credit repair can be the best time you ever invested. Check every detail including the neutral looking information like credit limits and reporting dates. Once you have identified the errors dispute them with the credit bureaus.

Need Help? Hire a Credit Repair Pro

If you are not comfortable reading your credit reports, or if you don’t have the time, hire a pro. A credit repair professional will insure that the job is done right. They will check statute of limitation dates and reporting period limits, identify compliance issues that may otherwise be hard to spot, write the dispute letters for you, manage re-disputes, and counsel you to insure the optimal outcome. Credit repair is important, take action today.

No credit repair information is complete that does not tell you the things not to do. People with low credit scores often try desperate means to repair their credit and are often misinformed, hence end up hurting their credit even more. Here are some of the things you SHOULD NOT DO to repair your credit:

1. New Credit File or File Segregation: Many bogus credit repair companies entice people with false promises and bad credit repair information such as telling them they can create a new credit file. This is also known as file segregation and is illegal.

2. Many credit repair companies claim to they can repair credit by getting accurate negative information deleted from their credit reports, thus improving their rating. Now, this is not guaranteed. You must first understand the process of getting information removed. No one can actually delete negative items from your credit file except the credit bureaus and your creditors.

3. Do not close old active accounts: If you have active credit accounts, do not close them. Keep them paid on time as they help build credit history and therefore help raise your credit score

4. Do not make advance payments for credit repair if using a credit repair service. Asking for advance payments for credit repair is illegal. They can only charge you for legitimate services that they have already provided. Do not be lured into any contract promising to repair your credit before any work has been done.
